History
(source: Wikipedia)

When American troops began to leave the Philippines at the end of World War II, hundreds of surplus jeeps were sold or given to local Filipinos.  Locals stripped down the jeeps to accommodate several passengers, added metal roofs for shade, and decorated the vehicles with vibrant colors and bright chrome hood ornaments.

The jeepney rapidly emerged as a popular and creative way to reestablish inexpensive public transportation began to place restrictions on their use.  Drivers now must have specialized licenses, which had been virtually destroyed duringWorld War II.  Recognizing the widespread use of these vehicles, the Philippine government, regular routes, and reasonably fixed fares. Due to recent fuel price increases the Metro Manila fixed fare has increased from 5 pesos to 7.50 pesos.

Personal Blog:

Early today, April 11, 2008, Friday, at around 9:30am, I, Joanna Allison S. Ang, at 18 years, 6 months, and 11 days of existence, was finally able to experience riding a jeepney alone. :] Something I just really had to blog about.

Daddy was to pick meeh up just a bit pass 9:30am.  What I didn't know, since I was only present yesterday, was that our Math35 class every Friday would only be for an hour, so we finished at 8:30am.  I texted my dad, and quite amazingly he said that if I didn't want to wait I could go ahead and ride a jeepney. :] hihi.

I went out of San Carlos Main Campus, crossed the street three times. :] I did a bit off walking to get to the jeepney stop.  When I reached the the jeepney stop, I stood on the shadow of the pole.  Quite a hot summer time, super!  I waited for a jeepney to stop in front of meeh.  I was quite shy to hail a jeepney to stop. hehe.  It took at least about four 06B jeepneys to pass by before one stopped in front of meeh.  I also did not want to go in the ones which were a bit full/ packed.  So I finally got into one jipney, colored blue, my favorite color.  Minimum fare was 6php. :] I prepared right amount of change which I got out from my cow jipney purse.  I was smyling while in the jipney so I had to cover my mouth with my hanky. hehe. x]  It was quite recently (the Leyte trip I had with the gang, the USC summer classes in Main Campus) when I just experienced new stuff.

I was sitting opposite the driver's side, near the front passenger's seat.  I was self-composed ( or so it seemed, or so I felt ), with my book on my lap and my bag on top of it.  My stop was almost up.  I was preparing my voice (I cleared my throat) to prepare myself to speak to the driver.  My stop was there, my exact words to the driver was "Lugar lang nia, plete o, thank yooh." hihi.  I arrived about 9:45am. :]  It was a 15-minute trip, a trip I plan to take everyday from now on.  :]

As soon as I got home, I text messaged my close friend informing them of my new experince.  Others were proud (princess, jade), others worried and concerned (elwin, anney, mama), while other (kyle) just laughed. x]  After that I slept.  Lunch around 2pm.  Around three dad brought meeh to skul.  Polsci group activity.  Dinner with elwin in main.  Off to Jobi jones to meet up for e4J.  McDo to eat again and then homebound. :]

That's all for now. :]

Maybe I'll see yooh in one of my jipney rides! ;]
